Asrin Law Office: Lawyer visits should be enabled in İmralı as soon as possible

Asrin Law Office made a statement on the anniversary of the last lawyer meeting with Kurdish People's Leader Abdullah Öcalan and said: "Democratic steps should be taken and lawyer meetings should be enabled in İmralı as soon as possible."

The Istanbul-based Asrin Law Office, which represents Abdullah Öcalan and his fellow prisoners in İmralı Island Prison, made a statement on its social media account on the anniversary of the last meeting of lawyers with Kurdish People's Leader Abdullah Öcalan on 7 August 2019.

The statement on Wednesday said: "During the last lawyer meeting held 5 years ago today, Mr. Öcalan stated that he could end the war completely within a week in the face of the possibility of conflict in Serekanîye and Gire Spî, saying that, otherwise, deep social wounds would be opened and the economy would not be able to bear this situation. However, Mr. Öcalan's call for a solution and dialogue was left unanswered."

The statement pointed out that after the meeting with Abdullah Öcalan 5 years ago, the ban on lawyer visits started to be implemented and said, "While an administrative mentality to gradually strengthen the society was sought, a process was initiated that polarised the society, made it regress and weakened it in every aspect, especially the economy. It should finally be seen that the İmralı isolation system has adversely affected everyone, turned the legal order upside-down and reached an unsustainable stage. Democratic steps should be taken, and lawyer meetings should be enabled in İmralı as soon as possible."

Abdullah Öcalan, Ömer Hayri Konar, Hamili Yıldırım and Veysi Aktaş, who are kept under severe isolation conditions in Imralı F Type High Security Prison, have not been heard from for 41 months.

The right to meet with the families of Abdullah Öcalan and fellow prisoners in Imralı is being denied by the authorities, citing "disciplinary penalties". The reasons and file numbers of these disciplinary penalties are not shared with their lawyers despite all applications and objections.

According to Asrın Law Office, "From 27 July 2011 to date, only 5 lawyer visits were allowed between May and August 2019. The last of these five meetings was on 7 August 2019. Only 5 family visits have been granted since 2014. The last face-to-face meeting was with Öcalan's brother was on 3 March 2020. Öcalan has only been able to make two phone calls since the first day (on 27 April 2020 and 25 March 2021). The last phone call on 25 March 2021 was interrupted after a very short time and there has been no news from him since that day."
