At least 1,133 people detained during protests in the last five days

Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya announced that 1,133 people were detained during the protests between March 19 and March 23.

92 people, including Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IBB) Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, were taken into custody on March 19 within the scope of an investigation into alleged corruption and links with 'terrorist organizations' carried out by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office.

In the “corruption” investigation against Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IBB), 45 people, including IBB Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu and Beylikdüzü Mayor Murat Çalık were imprisoned on Sunday, while 44 people were released with a ban on leaving the country and judicial control conditions.

The CHP mayor of Şişli district was also imprisoned and the municipality was usurped by a government-appointed trustee on Sunday.

Massive protests erupted after the detention of İmamoğlu in Istanbul and dozens of other cities across the country.

The demonstrations, led by university students and young people who mainly took to the streets to claim their rights and to demand justice, have been violently suppressed by the police with brutal crackdowns for the past five days.

In parallel with the violent interventions by the police on the streets, hundreds of people have been taken into custody during or after protest demonstrations.

Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya reported on Monday that 1,133 people were detained between March 19 and March 23.
