BDP supports earthquake victims on death fast in Van

Peace and Democracy Party(BDP) Van provincial co-chair Figen Yaşar, deputy co-chair Azim Yacan, Mazlum-Der Van Branch Chair Yakup Aslan and Van SES Branch Chair Yılmaz Berki have visited the earthquake victims who have been on hunger strike in the Anatolia container city for 29 days since the governor's office ordered power cut in their living space.

Strikers are protesting against the challenging living conditions they are being subject to, with officials forcing them to leave the container city, where they have been living since the city was hit by two major earthquakes on 23 October and 9 November 2011, and offering them no alternative nor giving an answer to their demand for housing right. Four among them turned their hunger strike to death fast on 12 September and joined by seven more people on Sunday.

Speaking on behalf of the earthquake victims on death fast, İsa Gören pointed out that that the AKP government was making them suffer and distorting the truth by accusing the BDP of provoking earthquake victims. Gören said all they demanded was their housing right and called on authorities to take action to answer their demands.

Another earthquake victim Ali Ahi said that they have decided not to send their children to schools.

BDP Van provincial co-chair Figen Yaşar said that members of the party would be joining the hunger strike as of Tuesday, and standing by earthquake victims until they are granted with their rights.
