Doctor Beate Ergün, who worked for the Kurdistan Freedom Struggle for the last 40 years and died of a brain tumour on 17 June, was laid to rest in Aachen on Wednesday. Family members, relatives and friends of Beate Ergün attended the funeral at the Hüls cemetery, including hundreds of Kurds from Aachen and Cologne. The coffin was covered with a yellow-red-green flag and decorated with a wreath from the Kurdish People's House in Aachen.
At the funeral, family members, colleagues and the Kurdish Women's Movement in Europe (TJK-E) paid tribute to the life of Beate Ergün. The 63-year-old friend of the Kurds, who played a role in the organization of various events in support of the Kurdish people both in her city and throughout Germany, became acquainted with the Kurdish liberation movement in the 1980s and remained committed to the Kurds' right to self-determination for four decades. She was a co-founder of the association which was first founded in 1994 under the name "Gemeindehaus Aachen" (Aachen Community Centre) and later renamed "Kurdisches Volkshaus Aachen" (Kurdish People’s House in Achen). During the funeral, the Kurdish women present shouted "Jin Jiyan Azadî!" (Woman, Life, Freedom!).
