Call for observers to trial of Kurdish politicians and activists on 18 October

One year has almost past since as many as 2000 Kurdish politicians have been taken into custody with charges related to 'terror'. In reality the operation which had his climax on December 11 2009 with the ban of the DTP (Democratic Society Party) was aimed had eliminating (by putting them in prison) the Kurdish political representatives and members of civil society organization precisely when they were calling and acting for a peaceful solution to the Kurdish question.

A year pass by, and more politicians and Kurdish activists have been tried and arrested.

The first hearing of the Kurdish politicians and activists arrested last year will take place on October 18 in Diyarbakýr. A committee formed by the Peace and Democracy Party (BDP), Democratic Society Congress (DTK) and Confederation of Public Employee Trade Unions (KESK) has made a call to intellectuals, writers, columnists and activists to follow and participate to the hearing. Foreign delegations are also expected at the first hearing.

Of the 1925 people taken under custody, 863 were arrested since April 14 2009 and now around 150 of them are still in prison waiting for trial.

DTK former Co-Chair Hatip Dicle, Siirt Mayor Selim Sadak, Batman Mayor Necdet Atalay, Kýzýltepe Mayor Ferhan Türk, Cizre Mayor Aydýn Budak, Sur Mayor Abdullah Demirbaþ, Kayapýnar Mayor Zülküf Karatekin, Baðlar Mayor Yüksel Baran, Çýnar Mayor Ahmet Cengiz, Viranþehir Mayor Leyla Güven, Suruç Mayor Ethem Þahin are some of those arrested last year.
