Kurdish politician Selahattin Demirtaş has called for increased solidarity in view of the coronavirus crisis. The former co-chair of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP), who is jailed in Edirne prison, sent a message through his lawyers.
In his message Demirtaş says: "In these difficult times facing humanity, we are once again learning how important it is to stand in solidarity with one another. Surely the dirty political mind, which disregards human life for the sake of its interests and power, will give account to the people when the day comes.
Do not let the discriminatory and polarising politics demoralise us. You should first and foremost protect your own health and that of society. Save your anger until the next vote. Because you are the people, you can make everything much more beautiful with your own power. Do not allow human values to be disregarded. Increase the solidarity and glorify the human moralities. All solidarity campaigns are very meaningful and important.
On this occasion, I call on all our friends to step up their solidarity and join the HDP's twin family campaign.”
The HDP had initiated the campaign in early April. The campaign is intended to provide assistance to people who need support during the Coronavirus pandemic. However, the campaign is not only about economic aid. Against the background of the coronavirus, the entire society is affected by social isolation, lockdown at home and lack of communication. The campaign therefore has a non-material value in addition to material solidarity. The families have contact and talk to each other. Not "Help for the poor" but "Solidarity with those in need" is the motto of the campaign.
