BDP (Peace and Democracy Party) leader Selehattin Demirtaþ said yesterday that Erdoðan’s statements were a kind of ‘call’ for the top court to close the BDP.
The debate in the Parliament yesterday saw harsh exchanges between Turkey’s ruling party and BDP over the Kurdish question.
Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoðan criticized the opposition parties including the Peace and Democracy Party, for collaborating with the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).
BDP leader Selehattin Demirtaþ said Erdoðan’s statements were a kind of ‘call’ for the top court to close the BDP.
During his address Erdoðan accused the BDP of supporting terrorism.
"Acts of terror are without remorse. Exploiting this for politics will not bring peace," said Erdoðan. "Saying peace won’t bring peace. Those who are in direct or indirect contact with the PKK are accomplices to murder."
Emphasizing that the PKK disturbs Turkey’s peace and creates the biggest obstacles for the country, Erdoðan said the terror problem is causing local and foreign investors to take caution.
"I’m announcing here and now that there are [BDP-run] municipalities in Southeast Turkey that are telling the Housing Development Administration [TOKÝ], ‘Why are you investing here? We cannot support you.’ How can this be so?” he said.
Erdoðan said it was the AKP who carried out the most active fight against the PKK in history. "We focused on law, investments, service and democracy, despite terror. It is an injustice to say ‘the government didn’t help the Southeast.’"
"The latest attacks showed the PKK’s real ambitions. They are working to block democratic attempts. When any peaceful or economic progress takes place, attacks intensify," said Erdoðan.
"The PKK is not and will never be the spokesman for my Kurdish citizens. The PKK is playing a dirty game. Those who hold guns cannot comment on humanity."
BDP leader Demirtaþ said Erdoðan’s statements were a kind of call for the court to close the BDP.
“Erdoðan’s remarks imply a kind of instruction to close our party. Those [AKP] who run after ethnic conflicts will not see the benefits of their efforts. Our policy is on the side of peace and democracy,” Demirtaþ said, speaking at his party’s meeting in Parliament yesterday.
Demirtaþ also criticized the AKP for failing to manage the AKP-sponsored Kurdish move.
In response to Erdoðan’s remarks that violence discourages investment in the Southeast, Demirtaþ said this was not true. He also said BDP didn’t hinder TOKÝ’s projects in the Southeast.
Meanwhile, BDP submitted Tuesday a motion to Parliament on grounds that Erdoðan discriminated against Kurds via the Kurdish move and politicized the judiciary via secret wiretaps. The motion also said the AKP put pressure on its opponents.
