Erdoğan to announce the democracy package before month’s end
Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan stated on Tuesday the “democracy package” of the government would be announced before the end of September.
Erdoğan, answering reporters during a joint press conference with Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in Ankara, said his government has completed the first stage of the works for the “democracy package”, and that he would organize a press conference and publicize its contents by the end of month.
The delay in the announcement of the democracy package has caused concerns and mistrust for the Kurdish movement and people that have been waiting the government to take steps serving the democratic resolution process in search of a solution to the Kurdish question.
The ruling AK party government has yet to take actions to answer the steps the Kurdish movement has taken within the resolution process which began after the call of the Kurdish people's leader, Abdullah Öcalan, on 21 March, Newroz Day.
The Kurdish liberation movement KCK (Kurdish Communities Union) which announced ceasefire on 23 March and started the withdrawal of Kurdish guerrillas from northern to southern Kurdistan in early May, has often criticized the government for the enhancement of the construction of military guard posts and dams in the Kurdish region, employment of further village guards and the ongoing imprisonment of thousands of Kurdish politicians in Turkish jails since the beginning of the resolution process.
In response to the government's failure to answer the efforts and steps of the Kurdish side, KCK halted the withdrawal of Kurdish guerrillas from Turkish borders on 9 September.
KCK remarked that the truce would remain in force, underlining that this meant giving the AKP government chance to take action in line with the project of Kurdish leader Abdullah Öcalan.
KCK pointed out that AKP government's irresponsible approach towards the process was the reason for the ending of the withdrawal for it treated the negotiation process as a chance to win the elections ahead, attached no importance to the achievement of a non-conflict environment and the withdrawal and didn't answer the efforts of the Kurdish movement.
The Kurdish liberation movement also criticized the government for not asking Kurds' opinion while preparing the democracy package.
