Eyewitness: Atakan was hit on the head with tear gas canister

22 year old Ahmet Atakan who died midnight while joining the protests in the southern province of Antakya late Monday evening will be laid to rest in the afternoon.

The preliminary autopsy on Atakan's body was done at Adana Forensic Medicine Institution where he was taken after losing his life at Antakya state hospital at night.

The results of the preliminary autopsy said that the boy's death was caused by "internal bleeding as a result of a cerebral hemorrhage and injury in internal organs, and bruising on his skull and spinal fracture".

Atakan's uncle Nevzat Atakan said that the cause of the 4-5 cm deep hole on Atakan's head has not been disclosed yet. The man said they would wait to receive a more detailed report.

The funeral ceremony for Atakan will be held at his family house in the neighborhood of Pınarbaşı, in Çekmece town, in the afternoon.

In a statement about Atakan's death, Hatay Governor’s Office said that "an ambulance was sent to the scene upon an announcement made by the security forces that one person had fallen on the street from a building".

Responding to the statement of Governor's Office, the head of the Hatay Chamber of Medicine, Selim Matkap, who was present during Atakan’s preliminary autopsy, said there was no evidence to prove that Atakan had fallen from a building. Matkap said the governor’s office should not have made any statements to the public before receiving certain information about the death, adding that the office was trying to influence public opinion.

On the other hand, an eyewitness denied the allegations that Atakan had fallen from a building.

The eyewitness, Nurettin Ocak, who spoke to website sendika.org said that he was with Atakan when the incident took place.

"Police vehicles stopped for a short time when people threw stones from the roofs of houses on the street. Then the police vehicles started to fire tear gas again, covering the street with a tear gas cloud. Ahmet was standing at the beginning of the street when he was hit on the head with a tear gas canister. He lost his balance and fell down behind the police vehicle", Ocak said and added that they have delivered the tear gas canister that hit Atakan on the head to gendarmerie officials.

The death of the young boy, who has been the third anti-government protestors killed by police in Antakya, has drawn strong reactions from public opinion with mass demos being organized for today to condemn the excessive use of police force and violence against demonstrators.

Taksim Solidarity Platform has called for a mass protest demo at Istanbul's main Taksim Square today, while Ankara, İzmir, Adana, Antalya, Mersin, Eskişehir, Kocael, Bursa, Balıkesir, Antep and Yalova will also be a scene of mass demos in the evening.

22 year old Abdullah Cömert was killed by police during Gezi protests in Hatay on June 3. 19 year old Ali İsmail Korkmaz who was also killed by police in Eskişehir in June came from Hatay as well.
