Factory in Izmit occupied by workers on strike

ÇEL-MER steelworks factory in Izmit has been occupied by the workers who blame their employer for putting pressure on the workers on account of being member if United Metal-Ýþ trade union.

Workers who faced threats from the employer since they registered with the trade union since the lunch brake on 2 August occupied the factory. The workers are demanding re-employment of their fire colleagues and recognising trade union rights of the workers.

While the workers remain in the factory the families are supporting them in from of the gate where they stay in tents. The families are also supported by other worker unions and democrats.

Meanwhile, the negotiations between the workers and the employers at the governor’s office are continuing. One of the worker said they have strong-will and they will continue their strike until their demands are fulfilled. A worker spokesperson Ömer Düztaban said if the employer rejects their demands they will extend the strike and it will not only be limited to factory occupying.
