Germany reports serious increase in politically motivated attacks in 2022

A serious increase in politically motivated attacks was reported in Germany in 2022 compared to 2021. Most attacks are carried out by right-wing extremists and racists.

According to data released by federal and state police departments in Germany, there has been a noticeable increase in political violence in 2022. The increase in incidents resulting in injury, in particular, has worried the government and security units.

The government published the statistics in response to a motion submitted to the Bundestag, and said that the number of politically motivated injuries increased from 1,890 in 2021 to 2,118 in 2022. The German news agency DPA pointed out that this number is an estimate and that the real figures are much higher.

Most attacks carried out by right wing and racist groups

According to the data available to the government, the total number of violent political motivated incidents is 3,600. It has been announced that at least a thousand of these incidents are crimes committed by right-wingers. It was stated that the total number of incidents that security units called "leftist violence" was 700.

Under the "foreign ideologies" title, according to the government's data, there were around 300 violent incidents in 2022. It was stated that an important part of these incidents were linked to the tensions in Turkey reflected in Germany. However, the government refrained from giving detailed information on this issue.

It was stated that nearly 50 incidents recorded by the security units and the police took place for "religious motives". The remaining 1,500 violent incidents were not put into any category, as the police could not decide for what ideological purpose they were committed.
