Germany’s Greens support Leyla Guven’s demand

Greens Deputy Chairperson Jamila Schäfer and Federal MP Canan Bayram issued a joint statement and announced that they support DTK Co-chair Leyla Guven’s demand.

DTK (Democratic Society Congress) Co-chair and HDP (Peoples' Democratic Party) Hakkari MP Leyla Guven has been on a hunger strike for 128 days demanding an end to the isolation imposed upon Kurdish Peoples’ Leader Abdullah Ocalan by the Turkish state, and international support for her continues to spread.

Germany’s Greens announced support for Guven’s demand and called for an end to the isolation against Ocalan. Greens Deputy Chairperson Jamila Schäfer and Federal MP Canan Bayrak issued a joint statement and announced their support for Guven’s demand, adding that Turkey should return to the principles of rule of law.

The two German politician women said they are concerned for the health of Leyla Guven who has been on a hunger strike since November 7, 2018 and called for dialogue to implement Guven’s demand and end the isolation.

“ISOLATION IS AN INHUMANE PRACTICE”

Greens administrator Schäfersaid they support Guven’s demand that the dialogue process for the solution of the Kurdish issue start and the isolation be ended: “Isolation goes against human rights. Nobody -even if they are in prison- should be subjected to isolation.”

Schäfer continued to point out that the AKP has been attacking minorities before the March 31 local elections to be held in Turkey in an attempt to create an atmosphere of fear. Greens Federal MP Canan Bayram pointed out that all candidates should have equal opportunity in the local elections and said: “We are on the side of those who fight for democracy and the rule of law in Turkey.”
