HDP says AKP acted "slowly and late" in coronavirus emergency

"The AKP did not do what was needed to counter the coronavirus from the beginning. Measures taken were not sufficient and taken late," said the HDP Health and Social Policies Commission.

Nejla Kurul and Samet Mengüç, HDP co-spokespersons of the Health and Social Policies Commission, issued a written statement about the coronavirus threat. There were delays in the provision and dissemination of diagnostic tests, they said.

The statement said: "The AKP failed to produce effective policies and take quick and adequate measures learning from the experience in both China and South Korea as well as in the European Union countries to counter the coronavirus emergency.

There were delays in the provision and dissemination of diagnostic tests. The AKP continued the discriminatory policies pursued in the last 18 years, even in this struggle that concerns everyone."

The HDP said the following needed to be done:

"The HEALTH, FAMILY, WORKING AND SOCIAL WORKS COMMISSION, which includes political parties with a group in the Turkish Grand National Assembly, should be convened urgently, even if it is late. It should take an active role in the fight against coronavirus in coordination with all organizations.

The government should increase the share allocated from the central government budget to health immediately in line with the anti-crisis policy.

For the right to health, as in Spain, steps should be taken to seize hospitals in a way that will enable health workers to participate in the decision process.

All state hospitals that have been closed due to the introduction of city hospitals must be reopened.

Access to coronavirus diagnostic tests should be facilitated and the diagnostic process should be expanded. The delivery of health services should be free.

In order to fulfill the right to health as required, the principle of multilingual healthcare should be taken as a basis in all hospitals.

The necessary protective equipment (masks, gloves, coats, visors, etc.) and cleaning and hygiene materials (free of charge) must be provided for all healthcare professionals.

Health, hygiene and cleaning conditions for prisoners should be regulated quickly."
