Three deaths and 143 tortures in prison have been reported by various human rights organizations over the past five months.
Human Rights Association (IHD), Human Rights Foundation of Turkey (THIV) and Contemporary Lawyers Association (CHD) Izmir Branches held a press conference on International Day for Solidarity with Tortured People and Struggle against Torture.
Coskun Usterci, representative of TIHV Izmir Branch, spoke at the meeting. Saying that 3 deaths and 143 tortures occurred in prison over the last five months, Usterci emphasized that no official nor independent investigations for torture allegations have taken place.
Reporting on the speech made by Usterci, DIHA news agency said that the representative of TIHV added that "those who carry out torture easily get away with their crimes. The AKP (Justice and Development Party) government has not taken any step to prevent the torture and no system has been established to fight torture. We are going to meet with victims of torture to document the torture, investigate each allegation of torture as well as report every incident related to torture. We do not want to be an accomplice to torturers the way silent people ultimately are.”
