There has been international outcry after Iran carried out its first known execution yesterday over the protests that have shaken the regime since September.

Mohsen Shekari, 23, was sentenced to death in a show trial for injuring a Basij member on September 23 in Tehran. The Basij is a paramilitary force affiliated with the Iranian revolutionary guard and used to suppress social movements.

Shakari who was executed on Thursday (Dec.8) became the first activist executed since September 16 for participating in the ongoing protest actions. However, there are still many activists who face execution.

AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL

Amnesty International said: “We are horrified that the Iranian authorities have executed Mohsen Shekari, less than three weeks after they convicted and sentenced him to death in a grossly unfair sham trial. With the Iranian authorities brutally acting on their public threats to expedite capital proceedings and carry out executions swiftly, we fear that other protesters under death sentences or charged with capital offences are at imminent risk of being sent to their deaths.”

IHR: INTERNATIONAL FORCES SHOULD REACT STRONGLY

Mahmoud Amiri-Moghaddam, Director of the Oslo-based Iranian Human Rights Organization (IHR), urged international forces to react strongly, warning that “If Mohsen Shekari's execution is not met with serious consequences for the government, we will face mass execution of protesters.”

INTERNATIONAL OUTCRY

The US reacted to the "grim escalation" of tensions and said that the Iranian government would be held responsible for it.

The German government also reacted to the execution. A source from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs revealed that the Iranian Ambassador in Berlin has been summoned.

While the British government called the execution "scandalous", Italy said that "the international community cannot remain indifferent to the unacceptable crackdown on  protestors by the Iranian authorities".

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights said that the death penalty is “incompatible with human rights”.

The Twitter account 1500 images published an image of a woman writhing in pain and shouting out “Mohsen” recurrently in front of her home in Tehran after Shekari's execution.

DEATH SENTENCE TO 11 ACTIVISTS

According to the IHR, at least 458 protestors have been killed since the murder of Mahsa Amini, including 63 children and 29 women. It is reported that the number of those protestors sentenced to death has increased to 11.

According to Amnesty International, Iran carries out the most executions in the world after China. More than 500 people have been executed since the beginning of the year, according to the IHR.
