Ankara police attacked and wounded two correspondents for Evrensel daily, Hasan Akbaş and Birkan Bulut, as they covered the clashes between police and demonstrators in the neighborhood of Tuzluçayır in Ankara's Mamak district.
Clashes in the neighborhood continued on Monday on the third day of protests against a government project, a mosque-djemevi combination, which locals see as an assimilation project against Alawi minorities.
Akbaş and Bulut were trying to cover the clashes late in the evening when some 20 policemen came near them and started to beat them. Akbaş was dragged on the ground and wounded in the arm.
When the correspondents told police that they were working for Evrensel daily, police insulted them saying that; “We already know what kind of journalists you are”.
The journalists were released after talks with police executives.
