Kobanê case to resume on Tuesday

The 21st hearing in the Kobanê case will be held on 7-9 February at Sincan Prison Campus in Ankara.

The 21st hearing in the Kobanê case, which holds great significance as it is closely linked to the closure case against the HDP, will be held on 7-9 February at Sincan Prison Campus in Ankara.

The case was filed in 2020 against 108 people, including the HDP’s former co-chairs, Selahattin Demirtaş and Figen Yüksekdağ, current co-chair Pervin Buldan, several current and former HDP MPs and co-mayors, and all members of the HDP’s Central Executive Board of 2014.

The indictment is based on a Twitter message posted by the HDP on October 6, 2014, which called for democratic protests in solidarity with the people of Kobane, a Kurdish town in Northern Syria that was under attack from ISIS. The prosecutor is seeking 38 consecutive life sentences for all defendants on charges of "undermining the unity of the nation and territorial integrity" and "premeditated murder."

The court, so far, has repeatedly violated the defendants' right to a fair trial by making decisions, including the latest decision to send the case file to the prosecutor without interrogating the defendants.

As Turkey approaches elections, the HDP believes "that this case needs to be followed meticulously."

Representatives of unions, bars, civil society organizations, opposition parties from Turkey, and an international delegation composed of parliamentarians, lawyers, and NGOs will attend the hearings.
