Lavrov: Kurds should be present at the Geneva II Conference
The Russian Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov, said that the Kurdish Supreme Council should be present at the second meeting in Geneva, remarking that the Syrian opposition did not only include people from abroad.
The Foreign Minister stressed that the Syrian government is ready to participate in the Geneva II Conference which -he said- should take place early November.
Several parties are trying sabotage the Geneva II Conference, Lavrov said and remarked that some circles proposed the Syrian opposition to stipulate Assad's fall as a precondition, and that they promised to intervene Syria in the event that Assad regime refused this proposal.
The Foreign Minister noted that military action against the Syrian regime will bring no solution and on the contrary worsen the situation. In this regard he referred to the examples Iraq , Libya and Afghanistan.
Sergey Lavrov said that John Kerry, Secretary of State of the United States, would convince the Syrian opposition to attend the Geneva II Conference.
In relation to the participation of the Kurds, Lavrov put emphasis on the importance of ensuring participation by the opposition outside the Syrian opposition, noting that among them, the Kurds are the most important opposition group that also wants to represent its benefits at the meeting to discuss the borders of their autonomous government to remain within Syrian borders. Apart from this, we must also talk about the participation of others, he added.
The Geneva II is a proposed United Nations (UN) backed peace conference that would take place in Geneva in late 2013 with the aim of stopping the Syrian civil war and organising a transition period and post-war reconstruction.
