MP Jallow: If a person is not free, society is not free

Jallow said that the Swedish Left Party would continue to support Kurds not only in the parliament or the PACE but everywhere. “This for us is a question of human rights - he said - and this is also a matter of rule of law and democracy.”

MP Momodou Malcolm Jallow, from the Swedish Left Party (Vänsterpartiet), visited the hunger strike in Strasbourg to express the party’s solidarity.

The Gambia-origin Swedish MP said that he had come to support the Kurdish people's resistance, and added that this resistance had resonated not only in Sweden but all over the world.

‘Your are not alone’

“I want you to know that you are not you are alone,” said Momodou Malcom Jallow, and added that the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) had the hunger strikes and fascist policies in Turkey on its agenda and this week’s session.

Underlining the importance of resistance against isolation, Jallow said that the Swedish Left Party has shared and will continue to share support for the Kurdish people through social media, reaching many organisations, party members, activists.

‘Isolation is a violation of human rights’

Jallow added that the Swedish Left Party would continue to support Kurds not only in the parliament or the PACE but everywhere. “This for us is a question of human rights - he said - and this is also a matter of rule of law and democracy.”

Speaking about HDP Hakkari MP, Leyla Güven, Momodou Malcom Jallow emphasized that the Kurdish deputy is unlawfully imprisoned and this is unacceptable.

‘This policy could be imposed on us tomorrow’

Reminding that he himself is of African origins, Jollow said that he knows only too well what discrimination is.

He pointed out the danger that foreigners, including himself, might be exposed to and the similar practices can be applied on them in the future.

It is not such a remote possibility, in fact, that a racist government ends up in power tomorrow, said Jollow.

‘If a single person is not free, then a society is not free’

Jollow said that from a left point of view, the principle by which “if a single person is not free, then a society is not free”, should be endorsed.

The Swedish Left Party ended his remarks committing his party to do whatever is in their hands to help achieve a peaceful solution to the Kurdish question.
