MSD’s Ehmed warns of resurgence of ISIS Caliphate in Syria

MSD Co-president Ilham Ehmed warned of resurgence of ISIS in Syria amid ongoing Turkish military offensive seeking to invade North and East Syria.

The remarks of Syrian Democratic Council (MSD or SDC) Co-president Ilham Ehmed during her talks with Swedish officials in Stockholm had a broad repercussion in the Swedish media that have widely covered the latest situation in northern Syria in interviews with MSD’s Ehmed.

Most of the media highlighted Ehmed’s warning that ISIS mercenaries could re-found caliphate in the event that the system established in Rojava is eliminated.

In her interview to daily Expressen, Ehmed said; “There will be no future for us unless international support is given for Rojava. Massacres are being committed at the moment that could end up in a genocide. The democratic project implemented in the region, which has been a hope for entire Syria, could be destroyed.”

Remarking that the U.S. President Donald Trump made a historic mistake by pulling out troops from the region, Ehmed continued; “They gave Turkey greenlight to attack us. We call upon them to rectify the mistake. We still believe that the U.S. have the power to do this.”

Pointing to Turkish bombardment of prisons to save the ISIS mercenaries, Ehmed highlighted that Turkey’s mercenaries had an ideology similar to ISIS, and that ISIS would be the winner in the event that Turkey gets what it wants.

In an interview to Swedish daily Aftonbladet (with a circulation of 820.000), Ehmed said they appreciated Sweden and some European Union member countries condeming the Turkish incursion and imposing an arms sale embargo, but added that these would not be enough to stop Turkey’s attacks.

Ehmed called for a no-fly zone over northern Syria and imposition of economic and diplomatic sanctions on Turkey.

MSD Co-chair stressed that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan wanted to expel the Kurds from the region and to settle Sunni Muslims in their place, warning of the risk that thousands of people could lose their lives as violent attacks against the region continue.

Swedish news agency TT also covered Ehmed’s press conference with the title “Kurdish leader: The Caliphate of the Islamic State could resurge”.
