Police attacked the march Halk Cephesi (People's Front) organized to protest against the “Gülsuyu gang group” in Istanbul's Maltepe district on Sunday.

Two people, Hasan Ferit Gedik (18) and Gökhan Aktaş, were wounded on the head and two others were wounded with a bullet during the police attack. Gedik and Aktaş were taken to Kartal Research and Training Hospital where Gedik however lost his life at midnight. His body will reportedly be referred to the Forensic Medicine Institution in Yeni Bosna district today.

Eleven people have been taken into custody in the operation against the group which is responsible for numerous armed attacks targeting civilians.

Following the armed attack of the gangs, an armed group started to mount guard in the Gülsuyu neighborhood and blocked the traffic into and out of the neighborhood.

Following last night's incidents, Istanbul police have today launched a new operation against the “Gülsuyu gang group” in the neighborhoods of Kartal and Maltepe early Monday morning. Many houses were raided and eleven people have been taken into custody in the operation.

Crime science investigation units have started to gather evidences at the scene, Güleken Street, in the morning.

Armed gangs in the neighborhood have launched numerous attacks against civilians and wounded a number of people since mid July.

The government however continues remaining silent on the matter, failing to take precautions to stop the armed attacks against civilians despite the protests going on for months now.
