Hatay police attacked people who started a march after the funeral ceremony of Ahmet Atakan, 22 year old protestor who was killed by police in the neighborhood of Armutlu last night.
Atakan was joining a demonstration in solidarity with ODTÜ (Middle East Technical University, METU) students protesting against the demolishment of the forested area on their campus in the scope of a construction project by Ankara Municipality.
After laying Atakan to rest at Pınarbaşı Cemetery, thousands marched to Armutlu where they commemorated the boy at the scene where he was hit on the head with tear gas canister that caused his death 15 minutes later.
Police attacked the mass soon after the march started, using intense tear gas and pressure water. Demonstrators are responding to police with stones and putting up barricades. Clashes in the neighorhood are continuing.
On the other hand, Istanbul police have closed the Gezi Park and blocked the roads to the Taksim Square before the mass demonstration, set to take place at 7 p.m., called for by Taksim Solidarity Platform today. Police buses and water cannons are piling up near Taksim Square.
NGOs and other civil initiatives have also made calls for emergency protests all around the country and abroad to protest the killing of Ahmet Atakan and the ongoing police brutality.
Protest demos condemning Atakan's killing will also be staged in front of Turkish embassies abroad including Barcelona, Berlin, London, Los Angeles, Toronto, San Francisco, Rotterdam and Washington.
