Istanbul police have carried out a major operation against "hooligans" this morning, targeting fans of Galatasaray, Fenerbahçe and Beşiktaş football teams.

60 people have been taken into custody so far in the operation which came after the Beşiktaş-Galatasaray derby that witnessed intense police mobilization and chaos as the pitch was invaded by fans in the final minutes of the game. Among those detained are also leaders of the fan groups.

The operation is said to be related with an investigation police launched into fans who were involved in protests after Galatasaray-Fenerbahçe derby one and a half year ago.

Around 500 hundred police are taking part in the operation in which more people are expected to be detained.
