Rehearsals for ethnic cleansing in Turkey

Rehearsals for ethnic cleansing in Turkey

Does not matter whatever they call it the civilised modern western world remained silent in the face of such a tragedy. Relation to the Kurdish conflict in Turkey, it is important to name the situation before one million people are killed. An accurate naming makes the solution more reachable.

It is a while that the systematic attacks against the Kurds living in the western Turkey are turning into lynches. On one hand the government’s so call democratic opening manipulated by the military-civilian bureaucracy on the other hand arrival of the PKK peace groups are used to justify these attacks.

The courage behind the lynch attempt in Inegol and setting fire on police cars by the nationalist Turks needs to be assessed. It is interesting that the same group sang the Turkish national anthem just before attacking the Turkish police cars. Arrival of the other nationalist groups in Bursa who were already on their way to Inegol when the riots started shows that everything had pre-organised.

50 lynch attempts in the last 4 years

The attacks on the Kurds in Inegol are not the first ones. In the last 4 years the Kurds were targeted approximately 50 times, mostly in the west part of the country. While most of these attacks ignored by the Turkish media, in the ones covered by the media the Kurds are blamed for the disturbing the public order, like: “Fight started by the citizens originally from the south east caused chaos”. On the other hand, the jargon used by the Turkish media is to justify these attacks, like “the anger of the citizens”, “reaction of the citizens against the separatists”. More gravely, the statements from governors in which they call the attackers as “drunk patriots” is an official way to encourage such incidents.

It is not a secret anymore that all the fascist attacks of the 80-year history of the Turkish republic were organised by state officials, including some who are currently involved in politics. Istanbul Pogrom of 1955 against the Greek minority is only one of them. It is also proofed that Maraþ massacre of 1 May 1979 against the Alevites was realized by fascist powers motivated and supported by the Turkish state. The common point of these attacks is that an ethnic cleansing motivation lying behind them.

Radio messages in Rwanda and Maraþ

Years before Rwanda, the radio messages to start the attacks were used in Maraþ massacre. The attacks started after a report sent by a local correspondent from Maraþwas manipulated and launched as “communists attacked mosques” by state radio TRT. Taking the previous experiences into consideration it will be realistic to worry about result of such incidents.

Especially twofaced approaches of the AKP parliamentarians in the Kurdish problem, the confession from the minister Cemil Çiçek that the stated failed to assimilate the Kurds and rhetoric of politicians saying that “the Kurds got everything. If it continues like this they Turks remain minority soon” are the indicators of such planned psychical attacks on the Kurds.

Ethnic cleansing is defined under international law as "the planned deliberate removal from a specific territory, persons of a particular ethnic group, by force or intimidation, destruction of their cultural and private properties, ranging from murder, rape, and torture in order to render that area ethnically homogenous."

Systematic dekurdification policy

The Kurds living in Dortyol had to leave their houses due to attacks and take refugee in the neighbourhood where are predominately inhabited by Kurds. Similarly, the Kurds living in Inegol after their businesses and houses were attacked are saying that due to lack of security they can no longer live in that town.

Remembering that in the Maraþ massacre houses belonged to Alevites marked in advance were attacked and hundreds of people were killed, today those who fail to hang Turkish flag which is considered like the indicator distinguishing “patriots” and the “traitor-separatist” will share the same fate with the victims of Maraþ massacre. Moreover, not only Kurds but also Turkish democrats who do not fit these criteria are also being targeted.

It is obvious that there will be high numbers of casualties unless the Kurds unify against these attacks. A Well organised Kurdish community can avoid fatalities in such attacks. However, in the face of more thorough attacks Kurds are defenceless.

Kurds who are subjected to forced migration policies of the Turkish state and settled in western towns as IDP’s are now facing another displacement policy. The big cities like Izmir are being cleaned out from Kurds and the Kurds living Kadifekale neighbourhood located in the centre of Izmir are being forced to live in collective houses out of the city.

It should not be forgotten that ethnically-motivated problems ranging to ethnical cleansing is the nation-state itself. Does not matter how hard they try to be democratic in the face of the identities which it destroyed at the beginning they turn into tyranny of the majority and cannot develop their democracies.

AKP dragging the country to the edge

AKP’s insensible attitude in the face of the warning from BDP has stipulated these fascist attacks. AKP is trying to create atmosphere that it is solving problems existing since the foundation of the Turkish Republic. However, it is not only increasing the numbers on its scoreboard but also dragging the country to the edge. While its so-called Kurdish opening is far from solving the question creating more clashes due to its pragmatist approaches.

Using the fix-reason of holding the Kurdish National Liberation Movement only responsible for the civil war potential that Turkey has, like it has always been done, will not solve problems but deepen it.

Looking at the reality of Kurdistan and looking for a definition like it was done by the westerns in Rwanda will create irreparable results.
