RTUK says no prohibition on Halit Bilgiç song

The Turkish Radio Television Supreme Council RTUK has said that there is not a prohibition on the song ‘You are my freedom flower’ by Halit Bilgiç so there is no legal obstacles in front of this song being broadcast. The statement from RTUK shows that the ban on the said song was brought arbitrarily by the Turkish police.

Turkish police has warned the local TV and radio stations broadcasting in Kurdish cities that on the song ‘You are my freedom flower’ by Halit Bilgiç has been banned by RTUK therefore they will face prosecution if they this song on their TV’s or radios.

Police who warned the radio stations in Hakkari and Þýrnak has also sent a written notice to Gün Radyo-TV based in Diyarbakir. Police showed the lyrics which they claimed provoking the youth and reminding them PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan as a ground for the ban. The alleged lyrics as follow: “You are the sun of the east, you are the fire of Newroz, you are the symbol of peace, you my freedom flower”.

After Gün Radyo-TV had informed Halit Bilgiç’s lawyer about the ban, the lawyer has applied RTUK in order to ask the existence and reason of the ban. Nurullah Öztürk of RTUK has stated that there is not such a ban on the said song and there is no reason either. In his written response the RTUK official stated that “Under the law RTUK observes the programs after they are being broadcast it is not entitled to inspect the programs before they were broadcast and RTUK does not have right to ban a programs.”

In relation to the song by Halit Bilgiç RTUK said “As it is clear RTUK cannot ban track. Accordingly, the song ‘you are my freedom song’ is not subjected to and sanctions and can be freely played on TV and radios.”

Talking to ANF Halit Bilgiç said that “We thought that the song has been banned by RTUK but after the correspondence with RTUK we realized that the Police is using RTUK’s name in order to put pressure local TV and radios. In relation to the suggestions that the song reminds the PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan, Halit Bilgiç said “My song is dedicated to all those who are struggling for freedom.”

Halit Bilgiç has also stated that after they became aware of the conspiracy by the police the stations started playing the song again and they will go to court against the police’s arbitrariness.

The singer also gave good news that he is working on his new album and his new son “this people will never be destroyed” will be released soon.
