Sáenz: There is a certain intoxication towards the Kurdish struggle

At the conference in Bilbao, the demand for the freedom of Kurdish People's Leader Abdullah Öcalan was highlighted, and his isolation was condemned.

While the imprisonment of Kurdish People's Leader Abdullah Öcalan in Imrali Island Prison has completed its 25th year, the actions and events organised within the scope of the international campaign "Freedom for Abdullah Öcalan, political solution to the Kurdish question", which was launched on 10 October, continue to spread globally.

In this context, a conference was organised in Bilbao, the autonomous Basque region of Spain, for the freedom of Abdullah Öcalan and solidarity with the Kurdish people.

Koldo Sáenz, from the international relations of the Basque trade union Lab, said: "The Kurdish conflict has had little space in the union struggle for various reasons; there is no specifically Kurdish union or union center like in Palestine or the Sahara. Kurdistan is divided into 4 states: Iran, Iraq, Syria and Turkey. The international trade union movement works mostly with geopolitical schemes based on current states and does not usually take into account the differentiated reality of people. The Kurdish conflict does not have the media echo of other conflicts and is not on the international agenda. There is a certain intoxication towards the Kurdish struggle."

So, said Sáenz," What have we done so far as Lab? We have approved congressional motions, supported the mobilizations called in favor of Kurdistan. We have promoted a unions manifesto for the freedom of Öcalan on February 24 and October 10, 2023. We participated in Brussels on July 27 together with the UK Free Öcalan campaign."

The conference ended after the question-and-answer session following the speeches.
