Saturday Mothers have staged their 442th sit in demanding justice for those forcibly disappeared and killed in unsolved murders.
Sitting in Galatasaray square, in Istanbul, they this week asked about the fate of those disappeared in custody in the period of the 12 September military coup in 1980. "The state cannot give an account of the 12 September coup without trying and punishing those responsible for the disappearances in that period", they said.
Speaking here, Elmas Eren, mother of Hayrettin Eren who disappeared in custody in 1980, said that "They took our children away and made them suffer great pains, accusing them of being communists. 33 years have passed but we still do not know what happened to them. We still cannot get a wink of sleep. I beg them to find a solution to this problem".
Speaking after, İkbal Eren, sister of Hayrettin Eren, said that 12 September meant "cruelty and being tortured to death". "We are here to call those repsponsible for disappearances in custody to account. We are here for Ethem Sarısülük, Ali İsmail Korkmaz, Mehmet Ayvalıtaş, Abdullah Cömert, Medeni Yıldırım and Ahmet Atakan who have in the same way been killed at a young age. We will continue giving a struggle until we find all the bones of the people we lost".
Istanbul Independent Deputy Levent Tüzel who also joined the sit in underlined that the 12 September mentality is still alive after 33 years today.
