Syrian FM denies chemical weapons claim
Speaking at a press conference in Syrian capital Damascus on Tuesday, the Syrian foreign minister, Walid Moualem, “categorically” denied that his country used chemical weapons on its own people.
The Syrian minister challenged the world to provide any single piece of evidence that the Syrian government was behind last week's alleged chemical weapons attack in eastern Ghouta, a suburb of the capital Damascus.
Responding to John Kerry, his American counterpart, who said on Monday that it was “undeniable” the Assad regime has used chemical weapons on a massive scale, and that US President Barack Obama would respond strongly, the minister accused his counterpart of lying and disregarding the work of UN inspectors when he stated there was “undeniable" evidence of a large-scale chemical attack.
"We are all hearing the drums of war being beaten around us. If these countries are willing to launch an aggression or military act against Syria, I believe, the pretext of chemical weapons is false, baseless and groundless”, Moulem said and remarked that a US strike against Syria would serve the interests of Israel and al-Qaeda linked groups.
Moualem stated that the Syrian government was "honoring all pledges and commitments" by allowing UN inspectors access to the site of last week's alleged chemical attack in the eastern suburbs of Damascus which reportedly killed more than a thousand people. He defended that the opposition was behind the sniper fire directed at the delegation on Monday.
The Minister added that “If the purpose of a possible foreign military strike is to achieve a balance of power , it is delusional and not possible at all" .
