Heavy clashes were reported yesterday at the Kurdish border.
The Turkish military bombed targets in northern Iraq on Wednesday. The operation started after PKK Kurdish guerrillas attacked a military base in Southeast Turkey, killing at least one soldier.
Before the air raid, Turkish land troopers are reported to have marched two to three kilometers past the northern Iraq border.
The PKK attacked a military base in Þýrnak province in southeastern Turkey, close to the country's border with Iraq, at 1 a.m. Wednesday. The Turkish General Staff said in a written statement that one soldier has died in the attack, but casualties could be heavier.
In a separate incident a specialized sergeant was killed and a village guard was wounded in the clash with the PKK in the rural Uludere district of Þýrnak. At least three soldiers were wounded in the clash, which started late Tuesday and lasted until the early hours Wednesday.
In a separate incident on Tuesday it was reported that another soldier died and three were wounded in a mine blast in the region, the governor of Þýrnak announced. The wounded were taken to a military hospital in Þýrnak.
