Turkish Journalists Union: number of people on trial for their opinion higher than ever

Turkish Journalists Union (TGS) stated in its 2007-2010 Work and Activities Report that between 2007 and 2010 the level of violations of freedom of expression rocketed. TGS noted that journalists, writers, intellectuals and publishers were condemned under laws that restricted freedom of expression.

TGS report noted “…435 journalist, writer, publisher, human rights defender, politician and children were put on trial because of their ideas. In 2007 the number was 254. The sudden rise in the number of investigations stemmed from the claims of “violation of the discretion of the investigation” and “attempting to influence the outcome of an ongoing trial” and “publishing classified documents” related to Ergenekon, Daðlýca and Aktütün cases…” 82 people appeared in court under article 301 of TPC in 2008, numerous journalists, writers and publishers have been punished. In 2009, 323 people including 123 journalists were put on trial for expressing ideas.
