Umrah returnee tests positive, bringing Coronavirus number to 6

The return of 21,000 Turkish citizens from Saudi Arabia causes concerns over the spread of coronavirus as they will not be subject to state-controlled quarantine.

Turkey has confirmed the sixth confirmed Coronavirus case after a Turkish citizen returning from Umrah in Saudi Arabia tested positive.

As many as 21,000 Turkish citizens have returned from Umrah pilgrimage during recent days and the people of Turkey are concerned over their possible transmission of the Coronavirus which was seen in Saudi Arabia as well.

The Minister of Health Fahrettin Koca announced Saturday night on Twitter that one of the returnees has “unfortunately tested positive”, which was met with reactions as the minister only advised the pilgrims to administer self-quarantine for 14 days after returning home.

The Minister said; “We are concerned over further cases. Please do not accept visitors. A medical screening does not mean zero risk.”

The people believe that this advice will not work considering the traditions of the Turkish people and call for strict measures such as state-controlled quarantine.

The first 5 confirmed coronavirus cases in Turkey were all family members of a man who contracted the virus during his travel to Europe.

Last week, Saudi Arabian authorities have suspended the year-round “umrah” pilgrimage to Islam’s holiest place, the Mecca, in a bid to stop the spread of the virus. The unprecedented shutdown state media said will last while the year-round umrah pilgrimage is suspended.
