The Women’s Foreign Affairs Committee of Switzerland has launched a campaign to send an open letter via mail and fax to the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture (CPT) in order for it to fulfill its duty for Kurdish People’s Leader Abdullah Öcalan.

The letter addressed to the officials of the CPT, requesting an urgent meeting with Abdullah Öcalan, is as follows;

On October 12, deeply worrying information was broadcast on social networks, claiming that Mr. Ocalan had lost his life in prison. Shortly after, this news escalated in the Turkish media. Discussions about Öcalan's health, security and well-being have created serious concerns among peoples and institutions struggling in the field of democracy and in particular among defenders of women's rights and freedoms.

The sensitiveness regarding the security and wellbeing of Abdullah Öcalan for the Kurdish people and especially Kurdish women is well known by the international community and opinion. Even though the public prosecutor in Bursa denies the news, we demand a public statement from Öcalan himself or his family members, lawyers or of a delegation of HDP. As women and friends of the Kurdish people, we do not find the statement of the Turkish prosecutor sufficient and our concerns will continue until we receive news from Mr. Ocalan from a reliable source.

The fact that Recep Tayyip Erdogan and the AKP government are directly responsible for Öcalan's well-being, state of health and safety and the latest statements made by the authorities only deepen our concerns. These concerns are shared by his family, his lawyers, the Kurdish people and his friends at the international level. For millions of people, Mr. Abdullah Öcalan represents their political will.

For this reason, its health, safety and well-being are the main concerns of these people.

Since Monday October 23, dozens of Kurdish institutions, individuals and friends have started an unlimited sit-in in Strasbourg in front of the European Council, demanding that the CPT urgently sends a commission to examine the situation of Abdullah Öcalan. As Kurdish women actively taking place in the sit-in, we want to express that we evaluate Öcalan's freedom as our freedom!

In this critical period, we call on European Committee for the Prevention of Torture (CPT) to intervene to obtain the necessary information in this situation and to eradicate any concerns regarding the safety, health conditions and well-being of Mr Abdullah Öcalan. We call on the CPT to urgently visit Imrali for a meeting with Mr Abdullah Öcalan to initiate proceedings so that his lawyer and his family can meet him.

Any inactivity of the CPT on this issue will only increase our concerns. We demand urgent action.

Aux fonctionnaires du CPT,

Objet : Demande d’une rencontre urgente avec Abdullah Ocalan.

Le 12 octobre 2017, des informations très inquiétantes ont été diffusées sur les réseaux sociaux, affirmant que M. Ocalan avait perdu la vie en prison. Peu de temps après, cette nouvelle a dégénéré dans les médias turcs. Les discussions sur le bien-être d'Öcalan ont créé de graves inquiétudes parmi les peuples et les institutions qui luttent dans le domaine de la démocratie et en particulier parmi les défenseurs des droits et des libertés des femmes.

La sensibilité concernant la sécurité et le bien-être d'Abdullah Öcalan pour le peuple kurde et en particulier pour les femmes kurdes est bien connue par la communauté internationale et de son opinion. Même si le procureur de Bursa nie la nouvelle, nous exigeons une déclaration publique d'Öcalan lui-même ou des membres de sa famille, des avocats ou d'une délégation du HDP. En tant que femmes et amis du peuple kurde, nous ne trouvons pas la déclaration du procureur turc suffisante et nos préoccupations continueront jusqu'à ce que nous recevions des nouvelles de M. Ocalan d'une source fiable.

Le fait que Recep Tayyip Erdogan et le gouvernement AKP soient directement responsables du bien-être, de l'état de santé et de la sécurité d'Öcalan, et les dernières déclarations faites par les autorités ne font qu'approfondir nos préoccupations. Ces préoccupations sont partagées par sa famille, ses avocats, le peuple kurde et ses amis à l'échelle internationale. Pour des millions de personnes, M. Abdullah Öcalan représente leur volonté politique.

Pour cette raison, sa santé, sa sécurité et son bien-être sont les principales préoccupations de ces personnes.

Depuis lundi 23 octobre, des dizaines d'institutions, d'individus et d'amis kurdes ont entamé un sit-in illimité à Strasbourg devant le Conseil européen, exigeant que le CPT lance de toute urgence une commission chargée d'examiner la situation d'Abdullah Öcalan. C’est pourquoi, nous en tant que femmes exigeant la liberté d’Öcalan, affirmons que sa liberté et la notre aussi.

En cette période critique, nous appelons le Comité européen pour la prévention de la torture (CPT) à intervenir pour obtenir les informations nécessaires dans cette situation et éradiquer toute préoccupation concernant la sécurité, les conditions de santé et le bien-être de M. Abdullah Öcalan. Nous appelons le CPT à se rendre de toute urgence à Imrali pour une réunion avec M. Abdullah Öcalan, afin d'engager une procédure pour que son avocat et sa famille le rencontrent.

Toute inactivité du CPT sur cette question ne fera qu'augmenter nos préoccupations.

Nous exigeons une action urgente.
