DEM Party confirms suspected assassination attempt on Sırrı Süreyya Önder before his death

A dangerous metal object was discovered on Sırrı Süreyya Önder's vehicle, apparently intended to trigger an attack. The incident occurred less than two weeks before his severe heart attack, which led to his death after 18 days.

The Peoples' Party for Equality and Democracy (DEM Party) has confirmed reports of a possible assassination attempt on its deputy and deputy speaker of parliament, Sırrı Süreyya Önder. In a statement on Thursday, the party said that on April 2, a dangerous metal object was discovered on Önder's vehicle that could have caused a tire to burst.

According to the DEM Party, the suspicious object was found on the left side of the rear axle of the vehicle after a parking garage employee noticed unusual noises while driving and brought the car in for inspection. A subsequent investigation revealed that it was a sharp, metal component that could have damaged a tire.

The DEM Party emphasized that the incident was immediately reported within the party and to the relevant official authorities. “Both our party and Mr. Önder closely monitored the matter,” the statement said. For reasons of sensitivity and security, the case was not initially made public. The investigation is ongoing, and a final report is not yet available.

Politician, author, filmmaker, and deputy speaker of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey, Sırrı Süreyya Önder, died on May 3 at the age of 62. Önder, who was most recently active as a member of his party's İmralı Delegation, died in an Istanbul hospital from multiple organ failure following a brain edema after suffering a severe heart attack on April 15.
