Violent protests in Kurdish region

Thousands protested killing of nine Kurdish guerrillas by the Turkish army despite ongoing unilateral ceasefire by the PKK. Hakkari, the scene of the Tuesday's clash, and nearby towns are the hotspot of the protests.

After yesterday's protests tension remained high in Hakkari city center. Violent protests continued over the night in outskirts of the city between protesters and Turkish police.

A 16 year old Kurdish teenager was seriously wounded during yesterdays protests.

At least 20 protesters were detained and Turkish police imposes tight security restrictions in the city center.

Yuksekova, a district of Hakkari provice was also a scene of violent protests. Hundreds of protesters gathered in the city center and set up a road block on the main road between Yuksekova and Semdinli.

Police attacked the protesters while they threw stones in response. Local reports say the clashes continue in all quarters of the town.

Nine Kurdish guerrillas were killed in a single clash in Mount Kato, northwest of Hakkari region.
