'We have courage for peace'

Responding the critiques from the vice president of ruling AKP Huseyin Celik, co-chair of Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) Selahattin Demirtas said: “We have courage ten times more then Sinn Fein. They [the Turkish government] should have been brave as much as half of Tony Blair.”

Reacting against the critiques from Huseyin Celik, Demirtas of BDP said that BDP is not the political wing of the PKK. “If the AKP wants to netotiate with the political wing of the PKK there is already a political wing but it is not the BDP. But BDP is still an interlocutor for the Kurdish problem and if the government wants to discuss about the problem they are welcome to discuss with us. BDP is a courageous party which paid great prices for the solution.” added Demirtas.

Regarding the comparison with IRA’s political wing Sinn Fein Selahattin Demirtas also said “We have courage ten times more then Sinn Fein. They [the Turkish government] should have been brave as much as half of Tony Blair.”

Demirtas continued: “If Huseyin Celik wants to find out how brave the BDP is then he needs to ask Tansu Ciller who was the PM of a period full of extrajudicial killings. Or alternatively he can ask his own PM who closed our party, got 2 Kurdish politicians arrested and ordered the security forces to “take care of” women and children protesting in the streets. If they are sincere in terms of finding a solution to the Kurdish problem they should stop showing off before the cameras and sit with BDP which declared itself as party to the Kurdish problem. Instead of knocking the ball out of bounds, come to us and BDP is ready to negotiate on a legal and constitutional grounds.”

Demirtas further stated that their Democratic Project is not only for the Kurdish regions but whole Turkey and it require regional self governance. But the politicians who come from the reign culture find it hard to understand. Democratic Autonomy means autonomous regional parliaments, empowered local authorities and administrations.

In respond to Huseyin Celik’s statement in which he said that the defendants at the KCK trial and doing a show by speaking Kurdish before the court, Demirtas said Celik is himself Kurdish but he could never express it freely. But as a result of the struggle of the Kurdish youth he can now say it freely. Demirtas also invited Celik to watch the trial so that he can find out who is doing a show in fact.

Demirtas also stated that self-defence notion introduced by DTK should not be understood as physical police force but as a force defending the society against cultural corruption or capitalism.
