The General Command of the Women’s Protection Units announced that commander Arjîn Kobanê fell martyr while resisting in Tishrin Dam.
The General Command of the Women’s Protection Units (YPJ) said in a statement that commander Arjîn Kobanê fell martyr on 23 January 2025, during the resistance against the attacks by the Turkish state and its proxies targeting the Tishrin Dam, located south of Kobanê.
The statement said: "The resistance of the people and fighters of Northern and Eastern Syria has left a lasting mark on the history of freedom for peoples. Under the leadership of the Women’s Protection Units (YPJ), our righteous struggle has dealt heavy blows to the Turkish state and its proxies. While the Turkish state has mobilized paramilitary groups and gangs to occupy our lands, the resistance at Tishrin Dam and Qereqozax Bridge has upended the Turkish occupation’s plans.
In this historical resistance, heroism and sacrifice have solidified the freedom of our people. Our commander, Arjîn Kobanê, with unwavering determination, stood against the occupiers' dreams of re-establishing an Ottoman Empire and powerfully demonstrated the YPJ's resistance against the forces of occupation."
The statement added: “Commander Arjîn Kobanê, was born in 1984 in the resistance city of Kobanê to a patriotic family. Comrade Arjîn grew up with a love for her nation, and with a heart full of patriotism. She aspired to fulfill her responsibilities guided by this culture. With this knowledge, belief, and commitment to the freedom of peoples, she joined the ranks of the Kurdistan Freedom Movement in 2001. She then turned her direction toward the mountains of Kurdistan, the homeland of women. Until 2011, she fought with great effort and sacrifice in the mountains of Kurdistan. As a revolutionary woman navigating the challenging paths of the mountains, she gained invaluable experiences guided by the principles of women’s liberation. During this time, she also acquired extensive military expertise.”
The statement continued: “In 2011, during the period when the fate of the people was being decided amidst the civil war in Syria, commander Arjîn once again turned toward Rojava Kurdistan to witness the resistance of the Rojava people who had chosen freedom and independence. She initially participated in youth activities, organizing the country's youth with great determination, and conducted significant work in various cities of Rojava. With the onset of the revolution, she took the lead in strategic and critical efforts in political fields, as well as in the organization of women and society as a whole.
In her contributions to the Women’s Revolution, commander Arjîn fulfilled her responsibilities, always with the awareness of serving the revolution. Through the experiences she gained, she became a commander in the YPJ, serving as a role model and pioneer in the ideology of Women’s Liberation.”
The statement underlined that “with her honest, selfless, and wise attitude, commander Arjîn represented the leadership spirit of the YPJ, training numerous fighters in the cause of freedom for peoples and women, and standing alongside them on the battlefield. At the Tishrin Dam, she fought with unwavering belief and determination that she would crown the spirit of the Kobanê resistance with victory. Commander Arjîn exemplified the principles of leadership of her time and embodied them in her personality with the utmost accuracy. On 21 January, at the forefront of the trenches of the Tishrin Dam, she resisted the Turkish occupation to the very end as a brave woman. She fought against the occupiers with determination for victory and faith and will be remembered as an immortal symbol of relentless heroism.
To commander Arjîn’s esteemed family and to all our patriotic people, we extend our heartfelt condolences. As the YPJ, we are committed to the ideals, principles, and dreams of Commander Arjîn. Today, we reiterate our unwavering belief that the resistance displayed at the Tishrin Dam and Qereqozax Bridge will ultimately be crowned with victory."
