Protests against appointment of Hevrin Khalaf's killer increase

The appointment of Hatim Abu Shaqra, the killer of Hevrin Khalaf, to a military post by the Damascus regime was protested in several cities across Northern and Eastern Syria.

The Future Syria Party, the Social Justice Council, and Kongra Star held coordinated press statements in Hesekê, Aleppo, Qamishlo, Raqqa, Deir ez-Zor, Tabqa, and Kobanê, to condemn the Damascus regime's decision to appoint Hatim Abu Shaqra, the killer of Hevrin Khalaf to a military post.

At the gathering in 4 April Park in Hesekê, the appointment was described as an insult to the dignity of the victims and a reward for perpetrators. Co-chair of the Future Syria Party Council Hêvîn Mihemed said: "This appointment is a crime against humanity and an assault on the principles of justice." She added that Khalaf was a symbol of peace and internal reconciliation.

In Kobanê, members of the Future Syria Party and women’s organizations came together to once again denounce Khalaf’s murder, declaring their rejection of the appointment and vowing to fight for accountability.

In Aleppo’s Sheikh Maqsoud neighborhood, women said that "appointing Abu Shaqra as a commander is a clear violation of international law." The statement called for the decision to be reversed.
