11 arrested in ‘Humanitarian and Security Operation’ in Hol Camp on its 6th day

The 'Humanitarian and Security Operation' launched by the Internal Security Forces of North and East Syria against ISIS cells in the Hol Camp continues on its 6th day.

The Humanitarian and Security Operation launched on August 25 by the Internal Security Forces of North and East Syria in the Hol Camp continues on its 6th day in cooperation with the SDF, YPG and YPJ.

In a statement on Wednesday, the Internal Security Forces said that their units had carried out a raid in the first section of the camp at 4 am local time this morning after receiving information on the locations of some ISIS cells.

“Our forces arrested 11 people, 5 of whom are from an ISIS cell. The investigation on the 6 suspects continues and the result of the investigation will be announced once completed,” the statement said.

In the meantime, search operations have been completed in the first, second and third divisions of the camp and the operation goes on today (Aug. 31) in the 7th division of the camp.

Today’s search operations started at 05:00 in the morning, with the Internal Security forces asking the refugees in the 7th division to evacuate their tents and go to the registration and document activation centres.

44 PEOPLE KILLED IN THE CAMP THIS YEAR

The Humanitarian and Security Operation was launched following the increase in murder cases in the camp amidst the Turkish state’s escalated attacks against North and East Syria.

According to the Internal Security Forces, ISIS cells have killed a total of 44 people, including 14 women and children, since the beginning of 2022. The bodies of the victims, killed by silencer guns, sharp objects and torture, were thrown into sewer tunnels.

HOL CAMP

Located in the Hol (al-Hawl) district of the Heseke canton, the Hol Camp is considered the most dangerous refugee camp in the world. The camp consists of 9 sectors, houses 56,097 people, including 29,152 people who hold Iraqi citizenship (7,791 families) and 18,863 Syrians (4,998 families). The camp is also home to 8,109 women and children of ISIS foreign mercenaries (2,416 families) of 54 foreign nationalities. The ISIS women and children are held in the ninth sector of the camp.

The ISIS terror in the camp is possible in part because the countries of origin of many of the jihadists do not take responsibility for their nationals. With the latest wave of Turkish attacks, the murders in the camp have also increased. At least 30 people have been killed in the camp since the beginning of this year. However, many murders remain undetected, as people simply disappear and their bodies are buried under tents or in other places.
