The Cabinet of the Progressive International released a statement on the peoples of Syria and their enduring pursuit of sovereignty, dignity, and self-determination.
Remarking that Syrians have the inalienable right to self-determination, as affirmed by the Charter of the United Nations, the Cabinet of the Progressive International said: “Yet the collapse of the Bashar al-Assad government — after decades of civil uprisings, military occupation, and hybrid warfare — has seen external powers both near and far hijack that right, risking the ruin of the nation and the rights of its peoples.”
The statement continued: “To one side, Turkey’s Recep Tayyip Erdoğan arms and advances his allied forces to capture territory, crush Kurdish communities, and destroy the democratic project they have spent a decade organizing in Syria’s northeast.
To the other, Israel’s Benjamin Netanyahu drives his occupation forces deeper into Syria’s southwest, raining bombs on Syrian infrastructure, drawing its tanks to the capital, and advancing a revived vision of a Greater Israel that runs deep into sovereign Syrian territory.
Meanwhile, the powers of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) prepare to rehabilitate the image of former Al-Qaeda members of the Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) — while using the opportunity of their victorious march to Damascus to expel the refugees that once sought asylum in their countries.
As many Syrians rejoice their liberation from Assad’s jail cells and the reunion of separated families, the country now risks entering a familiar centrifugal dynamic — with disastrous consequences for its peoples.
The Kurdish people, for example, have warned of escalating threats to Syria’s sovereignty, articulating demands to halt Turkish aggression and protect the majority Kurdish territories from its violent incursions.
Those warnings could not be more urgent. Against the core tenets of the UN Charter, Syria today confronts emboldened threats of imperial plunder and irredentist dreams of territorial expansion.
From the Cabinet of the Progressive International, we stand firmly with the peoples of Syria in their enduring pursuit of sovereignty, dignity, and self-determination.”
