Covid-19: 95 new infections, five deaths in North-East Syria

In North and East Syria, the number of registered infections with the coronavirus has increased by 95 within 24 hours. There have also been five more deaths.

In the self-governing areas of North and East Syria, the number of registered coronavirus infections has increased by 95 within 24 hours. In the same period there were also five more deaths, the Health Committee of the Autonomous Administration announced on Monday. The total number of deaths from Covid-19 is at 84, while 2,446 confirmed cases have now been recorded in northeast Syria since the outbreak of the pandemic. Of these, 584 are considered to have recovered.

The front-runner in the current corona statistics is the city of Dêrik with 15 new infections. The cities of Hesekê, Kobanê, Manbij and Raqqa are in second place with 13 cases each, closely followed by Qamishlo with twelve cases. Six infections were reported from Girkê Legê and four from Dirbêsiyê. The Shehba canton confirmed three new infections, while in Çilaxa two people are affected. Amûdê is at the bottom of the Corona day statistics with a new case. Due to the lack of tests, however, these figures can only be considered as an indication of a much higher number of infections and deaths. Fifty of the newly infected persons are women.

Dr. Ciwan Mistefa, co-chair of the health committee, observes the increase in coronavirus cases with concern. The regions in northern and eastern Syria seem to be in the middle of a phase of increased infection. Thanks to early contact restrictions, the autonomous regions were initially able to keep the pandemic well under control - largely closed borders and strict quarantine conditions successfully kept the virus at bay for months - but since the end of July the pathogen has been spreading rapidly.
