Ehmed: Talks focused on the process to be followed

MSD and the Popular Will Party have signed a “memorandum of understanding” in Moscow for a political solution in Syria on Monday.

A delegation of the Syrian Democratic Council (MSD or SDC) has been in Russia for talks with officials. The members of the delegation are Ilham Ehmed, the co-chair of the Executive Committee, deputy head Hikmat Habib, Senherib Barsum of the Syriac Union Party and MSD representative for Egypt, Sihanok Dibo.

MSD Executive Committee co-chair Ilham Ehmed and the Popular Will Party leader Kadri Cemil held a press conference in Moscow earlier today, after which they signed and declared a memorandum of understanding for a political solution in Syria.

The MSD delegation then met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Moscow.

Speaking to ANF about the meetings, Ilham Ehmed said; “A protocol has been signed between the Popular Will Party and our side today. We had a meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov at the ministry’s invitation. During the meeting which focused on Syria, we discussed on how the newly signed protocol will be put into practice and what sort of a process will be followed. We also made evaluations on how a solution for the existing problems in Syria could be developed and how our participation would be.”

RUSSIAN DELEGATION SUPPORTS THE PROTOCOL

MSD representative for Egypt, Sihanok Dibo also highlighted the importance of the talks, saying; “Attention was drawn to the essentiality of coming up with democratic and just solutions for the Kurdish question in Syria in accordance with international laws and the constitutional rights of the Kurdish people. The role of the SDF (Syrian Democratic Forces) against terror was also highlighted, as well as the fact that the securest regions for co-existence are the territories under SDF control.”

Dibo continued; “The MSD, which has a significant role in Syria, must be a part of the Syrian constitutional committee because the Moscow platform officials set one section for the opposition in Syria. Today’s meeting was constructive in order for more to be done on this subject. These works will contribute to the protocol to be realized. The Russian delegation has also expressed support for the protocol.”

PARTICIPATION IN THE POLITICAL PROCESS IS MSD’S RIGHT

Speaking to ANHA about the details of the meeting, Hikmat Habib, the deputy head of MSD Executive Council, said: "The Russian Foreign Ministry confirmed that it will support the participation of northeast Syria in the political process during the next stage, whether at the level of the Syrian Democratic Council or the Autonomous Administration. They confirmed that they will communicate with the UN special envoy to Syria, Geir Pedersen and with other platforms for this."

Hekmat Habib said, "What we understood from the Russian Foreign Ministry is that they realize that a political solution cannot be achieved in Syria without the participation of all Syrians, especially the Syrian Democratic Council and the Autonomous Administration."

Habib added that Lavrov stressed the right of the Syrian Democratic Council in the political process, and that the solution without that would be incomplete, whether it was in the Constitutional Committee, Astana, Geneva, or any dialogue on Syria.

On the other matters that were discussed, Habib said: “The field situation was discussed in detail, and regarding the Turkish attacks on the areas agreed upon between Russia and Turkey, we made clear to them that the Turkish attacks are still continuing, especially on the M4 road and drones targeting civilians. The solution to the water problem in Hasaka was also discussed in an urgent and rapid way, as the Russians promised that they would follow up on this issue."
