Internationalist martyrs commemorated in Qamishlo

A commemoration took place in Qamishlo on Internationalist Martyrs' Day. The act included the premiere of the film "Lêgerîn – In search of Alina".

Some 150 people attended the commemoration held in Qamishlo to mark International Martyrs' Day.

The movie "Lêgerîn – In search of Alina" was for the first time shown in Rojava.

On 24 March 2006, Martyr Elefteria Fortulaki burned herself as a protest against the imprisonment of Abdullah Öcalan and fell a martyr.  Being Greek herself, she also embodied the spirit of internationalism connecting the revolutionary struggles of Greece and Kurdistan.

The day of her martyrdom was chosen as Internationalist Martyrs' Day. With the continuation of the struggle in Kurdistan leading to the revolution of Rojava, the ideas of Öcalan spread all over the world. Revolutionaries from all the different countries would join the revolution, especially to defend it against the attacks of ISIS and the fascist Turkish state.

This year, the internationalist martyrs were remembered in the person of Martyr Lêgerîn Çiya (Alina Sanchez), who fell in 2018. Her name is well known in Rojava, especially due to her great efforts in building a new health system in the region.

Nasrin Abdallah, commander of the YPJ, paid her respect to the martyrs, while the German internationalist organization "Families for Peace" expressed their solidarity with the revolution, especially sending greetings from the families of the martyrs from Germany.

A representative of the Greek Revolutionary Union for Internationalist Solidarity expressed the need to learn from the struggles of the martyrs, saying "Martyr Elefteriya and the international Martyrs are our guide on the way to freedom. The ones claiming the end of history have already been proven wrong by worldwide uprisings at the beginning of the 21st century, resulting in the Rojava Revolution."

The commemoration ended with the screening of "Lêgerîn – In search of Alina".

Alina Sanchez, also known as Legêrîn Çiya, lost her life on 17 March 2018, in a traffic accident while going to Heseke.

Born and raised in Argentina, Martyr Legêrîn aspired to become a doctor, as well as a fighter and defender of the poor and oppressed.

After getting in contact with the Kurdish movement, she decided to leave her homeland to dedicate her life to helping the people of Kurdistan.
