In Northern and Eastern Syria, the number of cooperatives built on the basis of Democratic Confederalism, the paradigm proposed by Leader Abdullah Öcalan, is increasing every year. Agriculture, which is the heart of the economy and also plays a major role in the development of production.

The Jazira Region Martyrs' Families Council Economy Committee established agricultural cooperatives for the families of martyrs in the village of Sinciq Sadûn, south of Amude.

There are 8 martyr families working in the agricultural cooperative, which is the largest cooperative in the district. According to cooperative officials, there are poultry houses and 10 greenhouses on the 20-acre site.

Speaking to ANHA about the details of the project, Nizar Şakir, one of the project managers, said, “There are 10 greenhouses, each of which is half an acre, in this project. Potatoes were planted on 6 acres, and melons were planted on one acre. We have reserved an area for chickens. In addition, we have 2 water wells.”

Providing job opportunities

Xelil Warşin Ehmed, a member of the Martyrs' Families Council, living in the village of Sinciq, works with his family in an agricultural cooperative.

Ehmed, who is responsible for part of the cultivated land, said: “The project offers the possibility to provide work opportunities. The aim is to achieve self-sufficiency in vegetables and to sell the products on the market.”

Cemîle Xelef, who also works in the cooperative, said about the project: “We made good profits with this project. In terms of livelihood, we rely on agricultural work. We thank the Economy Committee and hope that these projects will be expanded so that the whole society can benefit from them.”
