Military council prevents infiltration in Ain Issa

The military council of Girê Spî has thwarted an infiltration of Turkish-backed mercenaries in Ain Issa. The nighttime infiltration attempt was accompanied by heavy artillery attacks on civilian settlement areas.

The military council of Girê Spî (Tal Abyad) has foiled an infiltration attempt in Ain Issa. According to the unit, jihadist mercenaries backed by Turkey tried to infiltrate the village of Mişêrfa on Sunday night.

Mişêrfa, also Mushairefah, is located directly on the M4 road to Til Temir, northeast of Ain Issa. A Turkish conquest of the village would isolate self-governing Ain Issa to the east.

The unsuccessful infiltration was accompanied by heavy artillery attacks on Mişêrfa as well as other villages. In addition to Cedîde (al-Jadida), Fatsa, Hîşê (al-Hishah), the surrounding area of the city centre was also affected by the shelling.

Ain Issa is bombed almost daily by the Turkish army and the jihadist militias it commands. The town lies south of the occupied Girê Spî on the strategically important east-west highway M4, which runs through northern Syria like a lifeline and is considered a link between the self-governing regions of Euphrates and Cizîrê. Turkey has a great interest in occupying Ain Issa. Attacks in the region have been occurring almost daily since the occupation of Serêkaniyê and Girê Spî in October 2019, with periods of high intensity alternating with periods of low intensity. Numerous villages in the region have already been destroyed and depopulated.
