Another school has been opened this weekend in the Washokani Camp near Hesekê. The project was implemented by the "Help Kurdistan" association based in Stockholm, the capital of Sweden, and is a great relief for the already existing school, which is bursting at the seams. The educational institution was built some time ago by the organization Save the Children, as classes had been held in temporary tents until then. With the new school, space has now been created for all of the nearly 1,400 children and young people of school age.
The Washokani reception camp is located about twelve kilometers west of the cantonal capital Hesekê and was established last November in cooperation with the Cantonal Council of Hesekê and the Committee for Environmental Affairs. It is home to over twelve thousand people who were driven from cities such as Serêkaniyê (Ras al-Ain), Girê Spî (Tal Abyad) and Til Temir in the course of the Turkish invasion. The residents are cared for by nearly 40 institutions such as the Kurdish Red Crescent organization Heyva Sor a Kurd, the women's umbrella organization Kongreya Star, the health committee of the autonomous administration, a camp council and security forces from Asayish and the HPC (Civil Defence Forces).
"We are very happy that the children have a perspective for the future again in a positive atmosphere", said Semira Hesen of Help Kurdistan yesterday at the handing over of the keys. "Because these children were robbed of their right to education by Turkey and its jihadists," continued Hesen. The new school in Washokani Camp has six classes and a teachers' room. Lessons for primary school children and secondary level 1 are carried out in three shifts.
