The ovens in Şêxmeqsûd and Eşrefiye, which were damaged in the recent earthquakes in Hatay, continue to bake bread thanks to a group of 70 workers.
After the 6 February earthquakes, some ovens in Şêxmeqsûd and Eşrefiye neighbourhoods were damaged, as were many houses. However, despite the damage, the ovens continue their daily work and provide the bread needs of 200,000 people.
Four ovens out of service
According to the Aleppo Social Economy Council, which oversees the ovens, four of them were damaged.
The damage is actually threatening the safety of 70 workers and Aleppo Social Economy Council Co-chair, Selah Ehmed Tirki, said that they sent engineers to assess both the damage and the risks for workers. According to engineers, most of the damaged ovens need repair work.
Special team assigned
Tirkî told ANHA: "Thousands of people living in Şêxmeqsûd and Eşrefiye are spending the night outside because of the recent earthquake. If we were to stop the ovens, we would worsen the conditions of the people even more and cause a shortage of bread.”
Tirki protested the embargo imposed by the Damascus government and said that this prevented them from reaching basic needs such as diesel and flour.
According to the report of the People's Municipality of Aleppo, approximately 400 houses were damaged in the first earthquake in Şêxmeqsûd and Eşrefiye.
