PYD co-chair Xerîb Hiso said that the attacks by the Turkish state have hindered internal dialogue and resolution efforts, and added that a new process is imperative.
PYD co-chair Xerîb Hiso said, in an interview with ANHA, that the Turkish state remains unwavering in its policy of plunder and occupation in Northern and Eastern Syria, launching assaults on local populations and institutions through various means.
Hiso emphasized that these attacks have proven unsuccessful, leading to a loss of influence in the Middle East and demonstrating a pattern of failure.
Hiso said: "The Turkish state has long deluded itself into believing that 'the more I attack the Kurds, the stronger I become.' This misguided approach may have worked in the past, but it will no longer yield results. For a century, it has accomplished nothing through massacres, looting, and occupations. Yet it stubbornly continues its path of brutality and fascism. The Turkish state has lost its role in the Middle East, becoming fragmented and defeated. Internally, it is engulfed in chaos. The solution to Turkey’s internal problems does not lie beyond its borders. The assaults on our region are cowardly acts of terror, which is why they are ultimately doomed to fail. The era of starving and displacing people has ended. The will of the people will always triumph over these attacks."
International silence must end
Addressing the international community's silence in the face of these attacks, Xerîb Hiso remarked: "The international community raises its voice for the Palestinian people but remains silent when it comes to the Kurds. This represents a profound injustice. While the Turkish state speaks out for Palestine, it continues to perpetrate massacres against the Kurds. This is the height of hypocrisy and deceit."
Dialogue is essential
Xerîb Hiso stressed that both Turkey and North Kurdistan urgently need peace and dialogue. He highlighted Turkey's dire situation, stating: "If Turkey fails to take these necessary steps, it will suffer significant consequences both regionally and globally.
Turkey is losing its influence. Turkish officials are well aware that at this critical juncture, Turkey must initiate dialogue. It is essential to engage in discussions with the Kurds and all of Turkey's diverse communities. Relying solely on an internal dialogue that develops within Turkey is insufficient because the country has never genuinely pursued an internal dialogue process or a formal peace initiative. There has only been a history of occupations, killings, and massacres.
Turkey has occupied Syria, Iraq, Nagorno-Karabakh, and Libya. These policies of occupation have diminished Turkey's standing economically, politically, militarily, and socially. Success cannot be achieved through these tactics."
"Turkey is missing historical opportunities"
Commenting on the AKP-MHP government’s statements regarding Kurdish people's leader Abdullah Öcalan and the Kurdish issue, Hiso said: "The government has issued declarations, but it remains unclear how sincerely they are committed to them. Is there any substantive foundation for this within Turkey? By keeping President Abdullah Öcalan imprisoned for 26 years, the Turkish state has effectively locked this foundation. President Öcalan represents a historical opportunity, and Turkey is squandering this chance. If it weren’t for the resistance from Imralı, the people, freedom fighters, and women, the AKP-MHP would not have made these statements."
"Abdullah Öcalan is the key to dialogue"
Xerîb Hiso underscored the necessity for seriousness in this process, emphasizing the urgency of the situation. He said: "If the ruling government in Turkey seeks to open a new chapter, President Öcalan is the essential figure for achieving solutions, peace, and dialogue."
"Physical freedom is crucial"
On 23 October, Kurdish people's leader Abdullah Öcalan met with his nephew, Ömer Öcalan, after a 44-month period. Reflecting on the message he shared post-meeting, Hiso remarked: "President Öcalan’s message has instilled great joy in the hearts of all those advocating for his physical freedom. He unequivocally expresses his openness to dialogue, peace, and new initiatives. If Turkey genuinely aspires to take steps toward a democratic and peaceful future, it must abandon its outdated policies. The country desperately needs a new process. There is no benefit in perpetuating isolation; physical freedom is crucial. Dialogue cannot exist under conditions of isolation."
"Developments in Turkey will affect Syria as well"
Xerîb Hiso emphasized the interconnection between Turkey and Syria, and said: "Just as there is a pressing need for an agreement in Syria, Turkey also requires one. Any progress in Turkey will inevitably influence Syria. The dialogue process that is essential for Turkey is equally crucial for Syria. Unfortunately, the Damascus government is currently ignoring this need and is shying away from meaningful dialogue.
Positive developments in Turkey and North Kurdistan will resonate positively in Syria, whereas adverse events in Turkey will similarly have negative repercussions there. Both regions are grappling with stagnation and vulnerability.
If Turkey can resolve its internal issues, it will pave the way for solutions in Syria as well. For instance, agreements between Turkey and Syria must fall; the occupation must come to an end, the Syrian crisis needs resolution, and everyone should be allowed to return to their own territories. If, however, Turkey is embroiled in chaos and continues to maintain its occupations abroad, this will obstruct internal dialogue and block the path to a sustainable solution."
