A solidarity hunger strike for Abdullah Öcalan and the political prisoners in Turkey has begun in Kobanê on Monday under the motto "Time for freedom - No to isolation". A tent has been set up in Martyr Egîd Square in the city center for the seven-day action.
The hunger strike was launched with a minute of silence. Afterwards, speeches were given by Arif Bali from the Council of Martyrs’ Families and by Rewşen Hacim on behalf of the women's umbrella organization Kongreya Star.
In her speech, Hacim referred to Abdullah Öcalan's decades-long isolation in Turkish captivity. There has been no sign of life from the Kurdish leader since April 2020. The activist stated, "The isolation and rights violations against political prisoners in Turkey have reached an extremely high level. The Turkish state wants to commit genocide against the Kurdish people. Despite the constant attacks, the Kurdish people have managed to make the philosophy of Abdullah Öcalan known all over the world. The international conspiracy that led to his deportation to Turkey continues today at various levels. The attacks on northeastern Syria and Shengal (Sinjar) are aimed at shattering the model of democratic autonomy designed by Öcalan. The arrest of Leyla Güven is against the will of free women. However, the Turkish state should know that it cannot destroy us. We all grew up with Öcalan's philosophy."
The women’s umbrella organization Kongreya Star has taken over the first stage of the hunger strike. On Monday, the Revolutionary Youth Association will continue the action.
