Students and teachers protest Turkish occupation in Kobanê

Thousands of pupils and teachers protested in Kobanê against the Turkish occupation of Northern Syria.

In Kobanê there was a massive demonstration of students and teachers today against the occupation attacks of the Turkish army and its Islamist auxiliary troops. The pupils carried banners with the words "No to Turkish occupation", "No to demographic change" and "Do not darken our future".

The demonstration ended at the Free Woman's Square, where a minute's silence was observed. On behalf of the Kobanê Education Committee, Cumana Misko gave a speech in which she explained that the Turkish state is using the "refugee issue" and its allied terrorist groups as a lever against the whole world. She also explicitly declared their support for the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), which have been resisting the invasion troops for two and a half months.

The Kobanê region, which became known worldwide in 2014 for its legendary struggle against the "Islamic State" (ISIS), is also acutely threatened by Turkish occupation. So far, the Turkish occupation zone includes the area between Serêkaniyê (Ras al-Ain) and Girê Spî (Tal Abyad). Turkey is trying to expand this area with daily attacks. In particular, it wants to conquer the strategically important M4 highway in order to cut Kobanê off from the rest of Rojava.

Another reason for the demonstration was Turkey's targeted attack on refugees from Afrin in Tel Rifat, further west. Ten people were killed there by a Turkish shelling on 2 December; eight of the victims were children between the ages of three and fifteen.
