The Syriac Union Party has responded to the allegations of Syriac schools being closed by the Autonomous Administration reaffirming that "the educational process and the quality of the educational curriculum at all levels of study are of great importance".
Manipulating those tools, said the Syriac Union Party, "could have a disastrous consequences. This was the case during the Ba’ath’s rule and its educational curriculums which were formulated according to its goals and ideology and the denial of all non-Arab identities in the constitution. This has been also reflected in the educational curriculum, which have contributed significantly to the policy of Arabization for more than 60 years".
The results of this policy, said the Syriac Union Party, "was the fusion and the loss of our Syriac identity and culture in our motherland, Syria. And this made our people's personality -unlike our ancestors- be lacking in creativity without any desire of development, without proper values and the power of will".
One of the goals of the Syriac Union Party is "to establish our cultural rights constitutionally and to elevate the Syriac language to become a national language, adopted in all fields, especially as the educational language of our children. This is a right enshrined in the United Nations human rights declaration. It is not enough to teach Syriac as a liturgical language, this kind of educational approach has been proven to be a total failure".
Syriac students must learn their heritage, culture, history and symbols, said the Syriac Union Paty, "in addition to the cultures of other peoples- through our own curriculum in Syriac language. This way, the education policy will be complete and just and seeks to promote and revive all national cultures rather than fighting them and wiping them out. What we have suffered in this regard is truly a cultural genocide no less than the massacres suffered by our Syriac Assyrian Chaldean people throughout its long history".
The Syriac Union Party and the Syriac Cultural Association "worked together to achieve this goals, especially after the establishment of the Democratic Self-Administration", said the statement.
"We are dedicated to ensuring those rightful demands by adopting our curriculum in our private schools to create a conscious generation that loves his country, identity and religion", added the statement.
The statement continued: "We will work at the same time to stop those who seek through lies and manipulation to disturb our peace and security. We will revive the Syriac language even though it is seen -and wanted to be- by so many- as an extent and dead language. We will stand as we always did against the classical policies that aim to sow hatred among the Syrian people components".
The Syriac Union Party ended its remarks by saying that "today our people has the opportunity to achieve this most important objective and the objective of all of our institutions and parties: preserving our identity and our language in our country and our land. Together we can shape a new educational process and thus creating a new concept of citizenship and participating effectively in the reconstruction of a new Syria, built on the basis of equality and social justice".
